“Living in India is like having an intense but insane affair, writes expat Catherine Taylor.”

Most expatriate ‘India lovers’ will return to their utra-sanitised, civilised, and possibly cold countries, after a short stay here. Is it not surprising that warm-blooded Latinos are less ‘passionate’ about India?

For the average Indian, I would say, living here is suffering a marriage gone sour where partners tolerate indignity out sheer timidity. For the adventurous, one to cheat to make life worth living!

Let me update readers on the ‘face of contemporary India’, from an extract sent by a friend.

“India has in the short space of six months exposed itself as a nation of mega-scams. The scale is mind-boggling!

We have now moved ahead to more scandals involving the prima donnas of the 4th estate using social networking in elite circles with lobbyists cutting across party lines greasing corruption in industries! Even someone as esteemed as Ratan Tata has gone to the supreme court to ‘bar’ selective leaks by investigating agencies. He has invoked a right to confidentiality on issues that do not fall directly in the line of ‘sanctioned charges’.(He does have a point, which is as valid/invalid as the US administration trying to stop Wikileaks under ‘state confidentiality laws’.) Its dog eats dog season here as the media cuts its nose to spite its face.

I think this is damn good for India – ‘future super-power’? – Bah! But then we must know how bad we are before we can hope to get better!”
